Several players arrived late to the game which probably explains why we started badly. In the first 10-15 minutes we were making many mistakes, dropping passes and generally looking like clowns at a circus, although this was no laughing matter. UM were causing up trouble as they kept us in our own half and disrupted our forwards. Their backs seemed to be constantly off-side throughout the game and were disrupting our back line as well. We looked like we weren't used to playing together as several moves broke down due to dropped passes or players making the wrong runs. Fortunately UM did not score in that early spell and we gradually started feeling our way back in the game, a bit like a blind man grabbing a pair of big tits by mistake
We started to win the rucks and malls, with Curly Sue prominent at every breakdown. Walter was also doing well as was Golod who kept the forwards moving forward by starting mall after mall from the scrums and rucks. When he did get the ball out to the backs he would do his customary pirouette (the kind that would make a ballerina proud) before passing the ball. This slowed things down a bit. By now we were controlling the game and we soon scored our first of eight tries. It was scored by Jimmy who dived over the line after an overlap was created. Con converted the kick and we were 7-0 up. The next try was scored soon after that. We had a mall on their 22. The ball seemed to be stuck in there but somehow Curly Sue wriggled out of there with the ball in his hands and ran to the line without so much as a UM player near him. It was now 12-0 after the kick was missed and we were looking much better. Chris and Dougie were starting to join the attacks with purpose as we were able to turn defense into attack with ease. Also our 2 wingers Tommy and Mario were now seeing a lot more ball and were both running well.
UM then had 2 tries disallowed. One for a forward pass and one for a knock-on on the line. Despite the warning signs we soon scored again. This time it was Billy Hall, trudging forward like a cart hose with a UM player hanging onto his coat tails. Billy wasn't to be denied as he heaved himself over the line with a massive "thud" as he hit the ground. It sounded like a dinosaur falling to the earth. The raucous from the crowd told its own story. The kick was missed by Nelson and the score was now 17-0. The only real blemish of that first period was the injury to Bretos who was missed as he had stolen several of their lineouts as the front jumper. Unfortunately he had to go off to hospital to repair his teeth. Oscar drove him.
The second period saw several changes. But the most anticipated one came when Bruno, the magician from Brazil, took to the field. All that was missing from his entrance was a 21 gun salute and a red carpet. He played really well and there was a real buzz every time he got the ball (and I don't mean the kind you get from a bee hive). The pace of the game seemed to slow down a fair bit and there were now more stoppages. UM scored their only try when they took advantage of on overlap on the blind side of a mall. Although the final pass seemed to be slightly forward the try was awarded as their player ran to the line. That wasn't the first time we were caught outnumbered in wide areas. We may have to work on that in training. After that we continued to impose ourselves and our scrums and lineouts were still doing quite well. Richard was the bison that was missing last week against Ft.Lauderdale. We scored another 2 good tries. The first was scored by Kio who had now moved to scrum half with Fabio coming in at fly half. Kio took the ball from the back of the scrum and after a clever dummy he sold the UM player to the meat market and glided in for the try. Nelson missed the kick and it was 22-5. The next try was brilliant. The breakdown was about 5 meters from the line. Dougie picked the ball up and forced his way to the line showing great strength and determination not to be stopped, like the school bully going for a little kid's lunch money. This time Con missed the kick and it was 27-5 at the end of the 2nd period.
The third period again saw several changes. The most amusing was Michel who came on for about 3 seconds before pulling a calf muscle. Oh dear! We kept pressing and were looking to finish strongly. With about 15 minutes left Stav, after drinking enough beers, decided to come on. He came on for Con much to the confusion of the other team as it looked like the same player came back on with a knee brace. We had plenty of the ball now as the forwards were doing well (inspired by Bruno). Con came back on for Golod who was replaced by Gustavo for chirping in his ear too much. We then scored almost immediately. The ball was won at the lineout and fed to the backs. Stav fed the ball wide to Con who tried to pick a long pass to the onrushing Jimmy. Although the pass seemed to be too far in front of him, Jimmy somehow leaped like a salmon and caught it in mid-flight. He fell short of the line but wormed his way over for the try. Nelson converted the kick with great delight and it was now 34-5. The next try was scored by Bruno and what a try it was. Again the ball was moved swiftly through the backs with Tommy making a good long run wide as he had been doing most of the afternoon. As he was tackled he managed to pass the ball and keep the move alive. Bruno was on hand to take the ball at speed and run 30 meters to the line. A great try by the Brazilian who supported well. That meant a Zulu (much to the delight of Rata!). Stav missed the conversion and it was 39-5. The final try of the afternoon came in the last minute. The forwards drove a rolling mall well which looked like a slow-moving train. Walter was the conductor as he shoveled more coal in the furnace. His face was black with soot but it was worth it as Axel got over the line with Richard and Bruno shoving him over. Con converted the kick and the final whistle blew. Tridents 46-5 winners.
Man of the match: Bruno
