ABOUT US

HISTORY

Retired semi-pro American football players who wanted to continue playing competitive sports established the Miami Tridents in 1973. They have been playing rugby in Miami as a member of the Florida Rugby Union ever since. The Tridents are one of the most respected teams in the upper division in Florida. Last year they were one of only four teams from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to qualify for the USA Rugby Southeast Regional Playoffs. This marked the first time in six seasons that the team has achieved this important milestone. Currently coached by South African Dillon Coghlan, the future of the Tridents is looking bright!

The Tridents play a short season in the fall with teams throughout the state as far north as Jacksonville, all competing for the Florida Cup. In 2001, the Miami Tridents finished second out of 12 teams that participated in the state. In the winter and spring, the side plays a longer season that could take them all over the country to finally play for the coveted National Championship Trophy. In total, the Tridents play nine months a year in addition to tournaments, friendly matches, and international tours.

The Tridents attend the following annual tournaments:
The Todd Miller sevens tournament hosted by Orlando and UCF in June
Naples Swamp sevens in August – Tridents were Plate Division winners in 2000
Sarasota tens tournament in September
Florida Cup Championship in November – Tridents finished second in 2001
Miami International sevens hosted by the Miami Tridents and winners of the club division in 2000

Friendly matches are played against touring teams that travel across the world and play local sides as they travel. Some of our opponents have been the Russian National Side, the “Legends” from Australia, “Area 1 Police RFC” from London, the Chilean National sevens team, and the “Boston Bats” to name a few.

The Tridents also travel abroad to play rugby at least once a year. In the past three years they have traveled to places like the Grand Bahamas to play the “Bahamas RFC”, Buenos Aires, Argentina to play “Alumni”, a local club there, and last year they played a sevens tournament in Punta del Este, Uruguay in South America. This year The Tridents are planning a tour to London to play their local clubs.

With the amount of games and traveling done annually, the Tridents can offer national and even international exposure to potential sponsors. As the gateway of Central and South America, Miami is the hub and a mandatory stop for touring rugby teams as well as an attraction for foreign players. The Tridents currently have players from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Spain, France, New Zealand, England, Scotland, South Africa, and Greece. The results of this grass roots marketing will be mutually beneficial to both you and the club. The following pages explain the sponsorship compensation and benefits.
